THE IMPERATIVE OF ALUMNI NETWORK:
Prof. Ikonne's Working Visit Example

= Ahamefula Israel =

Successive governments in Nigeria have invested heavily in the establishment of universities over the decades hoping fervently that these institutions can play a ground-breaking role in addressing problems of underdevelopment such as poverty, social wastefulness, low production, unemployment, hunger, illiteracy and diseases, among others. Although the direct contribution of the nations universities in solving identified problems has not been independently established, very little attention has been paid to this enormous lapse from the nations ivory towers due to the myriad of challenges which they face.
Nonetheless, a second line of intervention in national development is available through the alumni associations of these universities. Indeed, the strength of any university alumni lies in the pool of skills and talents available to be tapped for national development and not in its ability to serve as a money pot to its parent institution. University alumni associations can also be invaluable as a coaching network that significantly enhances the employability of future graduates.
For us in Abia State University, the appointment of Professor E. Uche Ikonne as the seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University has indeed rekindled the spirit of alumni network in the institution. In a blueprint titled "My Mandate: Our Story must Change, Professor Ikonne briefly but clearly outlined the vision, mission and strategies of his administration towards the aluminas of the University. Our Story Must Change encapsulates the direction and goals of his administration as well as the specific steps to be taken for the actualization of a formidable Alumni association.
Indeed, the alumni association of the University has received a formidable support from the incumbent administration of the University, which has in return placed the activities of the association on a smooth sail.
According to the National President of ABSU-Alumni Association Chief Umeh Kalu (SAN), during a familiarization visit to the Vice-Chancellor recently, We are very proud of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor for transforming our alma-mata. The great ABSU-Alumni family has been relatively successful, as the association is tied to the umbilical cord of a great Alma-Mata, whose motto is Excellence and Service.
At this juncture, it is noteworthy that form December 2015 when Prof. Ikonne took over the mantle of leadership, the alumni association has contributed immensely to the development of the University. This is as a result of his (Prof. Ikonne) commitment to unite the products of the University towards giving back to their alma-mata. This positive move has attracted the renovations and furnishing of departmental libraries and conference rooms, donation of books, hospital and laboratory equipment, and the recent ground-breaking ceremony of 20-bedroom ABSU-ALUMNI Guest House at the Uturu campus of the University.
In 2017, the Vice-Chancellor took another task of inaugurating chapters of the Alumni association overseas. These chapters include: Manchester, United Kingdom and North America chapters of ABSU ALUMNI Association respectively. As a Vice-Chancellor whose desire of linking Abia State University with reputable international organizations, this inauguration gave him the opportunity to establish Academic collaborations with the following institutions:
A memorandum of understanding with State University of New York president, College of Optometry, for the staff and students exchange programmes, collaborative research in optometry and vision science.
A memorandum of understanding with University of Mexico on joint research activity for Staff and Students of both institutions.
A Memorandum of understanding with Oxford University, United Kingdom, for a collaborative relationship in academic exchange programme between Oxford University and Abia State University.
Today, the Vice-Chancellor Professor E. Uche Ikonne is on a working visit to Maryland, USA, on the invitation of the University Alumni association, to formally inaugurate the Maryland, USA Chapter of the University Alumni Association.
As usual, we have no doubt that this working visit of our quintessential and dynamic Vice-Chancellor will indeed attract more international collaboration with reputable international institutions and organizations to our University.
I shall update you in due course. Stay tuned!
